Biodegradable products may not be so green (LiveScience.com)

Once thrown of biodegradable products - ranging from garbage bags and liners of layers of pens - are designed to decompose relatively quickly and disappear into the natural environment. But these products may not respect their green image, indicates new research.

"The implication is, it is biodegradable, therefore, it is better for the environment-, and our point is: well, not necessarily and not so rapid," said study researcher Morton Barlaz, who heads to North Carolina State University Department of Civil, Construction and environmental engineering.

These biodegradable products release a powerful greenhouse gas, methane, as they decompose in landfills, a problem compounded by the relatively rapid rate at which they decompose.

Barlaz and his colleagues watched what happened when the food waste, paper, newsprint, overall municipal solid waste and a biodegradable polymer called PHBO were buried in the average American landfill. Modelling experience have shown that the materials with higher rates of decomposition, such as food waste and PHBO, issued more than ultimately methane in the atmosphere.

"More slowly that the gas is produced, more it gets collected" to the dump, said Barlaz. "It is a function of how operate landfills." Collectors systems are usually installed after the waste are buried. ?

During the interval, usually about two years, more rapid decomposition, methane is more output.

To improve the environmental benefit of biodegradable products, they should be designed to decompose more slowly and more methane should be collected in landfill, he said. [10 Ways to green your home]

With the technology, the methane can really help the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that about one third of the waste produced in the United States goes to landfills that capture methane and use it to generate heat and electricity. Another third goes to landfill sites where it is simply burned (and found in the atmosphere), and the rest goes to landfill sites that allow methane to escape into the atmosphere, according to Barlaz.

Stays of methane in the atmosphere for a period of time much shorter that another greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, but in the meantime it captures heat more effectively.

The research, led by James Levis, Ph.d. at the University of North Carolina student, appeared online on May 27 in the journal Science & environmental technology.

US coal film aims to put the wind in the sails of green energy (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - a new film to protest us coal mines and featuring Robert f. Kennedy Jr. objectives to stimulate green alternatives such as wind power and to emphasize the "criminal" destruction by the industry.

Change five years after "An Inconvenient Truth," film of landmark of Al Gore on climate, "The last mountain" officials hope that the documentary will engage viewers through the history of a community of Virginia threatened by the "Big coal."

"'An inconvenient truth' awakened the world to the dangers of climate change, so that it had not been awakened before," said the Director Bill Haney.

But "what you as individuals can do to dispute the interest to be, that create this problem..." "It has not," he told AFP, saying that he would be happy if his film has as much success as the former Vice President Al Gore.

The film opens Friday in New York and Washington and will be published in other cities of the United States in the coming weeks.

The film tells the story of a community of the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia taking on Massey Energy, one of the largest coal producers in the United States, trying to stop its practice of the Summit of the mountain reference to mine coal seams.

Kennedy, Member of the family policy staged U.S. and an environment fleure, is shown joining the demonstrators in the coal River Valley as they fight to preserve their health and the environment.

"I was a little reluctant to commit to make a film just because he was more sensitive for other types of advocacy and really did not know much about the realization of films," Kennedy said, describing his initial reaction to the project.

But after he met Haney, he decided he could "articulating the link between democracy and the environment" and help fight Massey in West Virginia, where he has long been involved.

"Virtually the whole industry is a criminal enterprise, and I do not say that lightly," he told AFP.

Surprising, the film provides relatively generous time, mining patterns and workers saying vital how the industry is jobs during difficult economic times.

Haney contrasts his film with more directly documentaries polemical, such as Michael Moore, including "Bowling for Columbine," "Fahrenheit 9/11" and the film of health services "sicko."

"I really respect the realization of films of Michael Moore and his talent, but he clearly polemical." I do not say that there is no objection to that, I say that this is what they are. This is not what I do, he said.

While much of the film following the protest, including demonstrators in the tree-top and activists against the impact on health on a local school, it shows also develop alternative solutions, such as the construction of wind turbines of people.

Kennedy argues that the coal industry is, ultimately, can exist without the help of policies.

"If we had a real free market, coal could not operate on the market." It is simply too expensive. And oil could not work. If we pay at the pump for the war in Iraq, we would be off the coast of the day to the next oil. ?

Kennedy also draws comparisons with oil spill Deepwater Horizon of the year last in the Gulf of Mexico, which took place in the edition of the film.

"It's the same story, different location," he said.

Haney cited as saying that the spill, the U.S. authorities blame on oil British giant BP, was the largest environmental disaster in the history of the country.

"But Massey overflowed... two times more waste and not in the deep ocean and the salt water where it disperses, but in the rivers of the nation, fresh water supply." So, if this is the worst, Massey is twice the worst?

"It give us a perspective to help the public, which saw huge media coverage of oil from BP spill and very little coverage of this tip of coal.

Court of Italy gives the green light on the nuclear referendum (AFP)

MILAN (AFP) - the top appeals court Italy gave the go-ahead for a referendum on nuclear power Wednesday despite a Government decision to temporarily freeze plans to return to nuclear power following the disaster at the Japan.

Italians will vote June 12 and 13 in the referendum, which, if approved, and if participation is high enough, would impose a permanent ban on nuclear power.

Centre-left opposition has lobbied for a referendum and rejected the moratorium the Government announced in April as an interim measure.

The Italy of the values party opposition had slammed Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to not recognize the strong public opposition to nuclear energy to try to undermine the referendum.

Berlusconi has long advocated nuclear power.

Before the decision of the Court, he insisted on freezing on the program rendered unnecessary to carry out the referendum, while confirming the Government's intentions to pick up nuclear calendar within two years.

The head of the main opposition Democratic Party, Pier Luigi Bersani, said that the green light for the referendum was "excellent news."

He said "dirty tricks by the Government were exposed once more,".

The campaign "Vote Yes to stop nuclear", a group of more coordination of 80 associations, said the Court of appeal was "censored the arrogance of the Government and given citizens the right to decide on nuclear power."

Nuclear abandoned Italy after a referendum in 1987 following the Chernobyl disaster.

Berlusconi was scheduled to begin to build nuclear power plants from 2014 and produce a quarter of its electricity with atomic energy by 2030.

As well as nuclear energy, the referendum will call for Italians vote on privatization of the water.

They will also vote on the embattled Berlusconi - currently on trial for crimes of sex and fraud - it has the right to refuse to appear in court for a period of 18 months to enable him to concentrate on his political commitments.

The personal benefits of gardening (Y!) (Green)

Apart from improving our environment and have your own source of flowers, fruits and vegetables, we often neglect other benefits which gives us the gardening.

To start with the gardening is really exercise. The physical benefits of gardening are often reduced because people considered "real" exercise But gardening offers the same benefits, as do other forms of exercise. Did you know that you can burn as many calories in 45 minutes of gardening you can in 30 minutes of aerobic sessions? And according to the task that you do, you are using many different muscle groups and increase your flexibility and strength.

[Ways exercise eight makes you Gorgeous]

Work in the garden reduces stress. Connection with nature, by digging in the dirt, even weeding is one of the best reducers of stress I've found. When I started gardening, I dreaded the thought of weeding by hand. I thought it was unnecessary and unpleasant gardening part. As the years have passed, I have concluded that the weeding is the only thing that allows me to relax completely and makes me forget all the rest. I am so eager to get out the weeds in my garden that I become intensely focused on it.

This brings me to another advantage of gardening, it allows me to unplug and forces me to slow down the pace of my life. We all so wired and connected that work in the garden, this is the a way I can get away from the constant dam information connected brings with it.

[You, Unplugged]

One of the things most surprising that gardening has done for me is to teach me how to have more patience. Think about it. You cannot rush nature. If you sow or plant seedlings, you may not them grow more quickly they are able to grow the just because you are limited to time or by putting pressure on them to grow faster. They grow at the pace they are supposed to grow any faster or slower.

Gardening also frees our creativity, often without us even. Garden planning for the year or season, choosing the colors of flowers and plant palettes and arrange fresh flowers in your garden all require them that you use your creative side.

Water affects mood (Y!) (Green)

While we know that it is important to drink water for optimal physical operation, a Tufts University 2009 survey concluded that a lack of adequate water consumption also has a tangible impact on our mood.

The subjects of the study were 31 male and female student athletes who made 60 to 75 minutes of aerobic activity high impact, although only slightly dehydrated. These students reported feeling more fatigue, depression, confusion, tension or anger than the control group who engage in similar activities.

The Tufts research team has also studied the impact of the dehydration of the cognitive abilities of the athlete. While there was a negative influence on cognition, it was concluded that there is a strong correlation between mild dehydration and mood.

Authors of the study take into account the amount of dehydration (1-2% losses) comparable to mild dehydration, that many people experience on a daily basis by inadequate amounts of water to drink.

Thus, the amount of water should we drink on a daily basis? The amount differs according to variables such as weight, level of activity and weather conditions. The generally recommended amount is eight to nine glasses of water per day. According to Kristen e. Of Anci, PhD, one of the principal investigators of the study of the clumps, "eight glasses of 8 ounces of water a day never harm anybody."

Another general indicator of water use adequate is the amount and color of your urine; If you produce approximately 6.3 cups of urine per day and it is a colourless to slightly yellow (i.e. step concentrated and dark), it is a good indication that you do not consume enough water.

Wait, however, to feel thirst, thirst is usually a sign that you are already slightly dehydrated. And as strange as it may seem, it is possible to drink too much water, which resulted in the water intoxication, which can lead to death. As it is useful in a large part of life, let common sense and consider what you feel be your guide.

TV time really damage the eyes kids' (Y!) (Green)

Your mother always told you that look too television was bad for your eyes. And she was right. New Australian research has found that that spend too much time watching TV could cause irreparable harm to the eyes of the child and may even entail risks for health later in life.

The study, published in the journal arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology was conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney of the Australia. Researchers evaluated recommended six years selected randomly from 34 schools throughout Sydney. Surveys of parents completed for children on the amount of time their children spent exercise and the amount of time they spend in a computer or TV.

Then, they examined the eyes of children. They found that children who watch the most TV had smaller blood vessels in their eyes that children who watched least. In addition to potential damage to the health of the eyes, these small blood vessels can damage the overall health of the child later in life. In adults, the small blood vessels are indicators of increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

It is still not clear exactly how and if TV time could lead to heart disease via damage to eyes. But it is clear that watching too much television is amended the eyes of a child at a time when they are more vulnerable to damage. And that is reason enough to disable.

More reason for children to move away from the screen and play outside. It is healthier in the short term and long term.

Green Racing technology boom, but not yet to the United States (ContributorNetwork)

It seems paradoxical that China would be leading the race for green technology. After all, the world watched as the country faced with pollution air in the capital during the Olympic Games in Beijing. China was known for his environmental disregard in many respects, but it seems that a change takes place, at least in its contribution to green technology.

The growth of China in this sector of the economy has been remarkable, 77% per year (compared with 28% the United States).

Then that a new report by Roland Berger, a German consulting firm, for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature says that Denmark more of its gross domestic product (GDP) devoted to green technologies (3.1%), China is leading in the considerable volume of dollar $ 63.9 billion.

Where the United States stand and why

Where does to rank United States? To a 17th place sorry, according to the study, behind countries such as the Brazil and the Germany. Green technology in the United States contributes only 0.3% of national GDP. When the United States has a President who advocates more technology green at every turn (including provisions in the stimulus package), just why are lagging behind so much compared with Europe and Asia?

While the United States is long an adapter of new technologies, particularly in the information technology (IT) sector, with China and European countries behind the country was also in an ideological war the idea of a global warming of the planet and energy policy in General.

Obviously, the energy sector impacts on every type of business, from SMEs to multinationals. Rising gas prices are linked to the cost of goods and market services. The oil speculation and instability continues to factor in the Middle East and African nations in high energy of the United States and the more expensive goods in trade around the world.

The lesson of green development

While European countries such as the Germany and the Denmark and the Asian nation of China came to the table of green technology from different angles, all see the increasing need for new energy technologies and the need to develop low-energy productssuch as lighting, in power in the future. Denmark has been a leader for the years in areas such as wind energy, energy-efficient products and renewable energies.

China has on the contrary, in view of the green movement towards energy efficiency and alternative energy technologies as a new growing market rather than as a means to improve the internal problems. For example, the country started its activities largely to export solar cell, but he began to adapt within China itself once manufacturing has been implemented.

No ideological divide

An area in which Europe and China were passed to the United States in his lack of progress is the acceptance of global warming of the planet as a real, viable problem. When the debate continues on Capitol Hill on the question of whether or not global warming indeed exists, talk continued in these countries.

It was particularly easy in China, where the direction feels unnecessary debate on any question of Government policy, merely the action. While citizens and business of the United States people clearly don't want democracy for the convenience of the trade, she helped China rapidly intensify to the issue and play a strong leadership role, put his money in the development of green industry and its affiliated technologies. Quite simply, for the Chinese, it is on the growth of the market and take the lead in this new industry.

This new area booming brings with it the potential for growth that will meet future needs. Although the United States and the business community have been slow to take on green technologies (and the Government have been slow to provide economic support of any substantial nature, compared to the older energy technologies), it is not too late. The field of green technology, including the green, is wide open to those who can see its value and future prospects.

When the best time to buy gas? (Y!) (Green)

pumping gas
(Photo: Getty Images) With the soaring prices of gasoline and high level now, we have seen over the years, we are all looking for ways to save money at the reservoir. The best way to do so could be by time purchases correctly, say experts.

The hour of the day can also be a factor in the price of gasoline. Many people believe that the purchase of gas when it is cold outside, as in the morning or evening, will save you. While there is some science behind it, colder temperatures don't give you enough extra volume of gasoline to make a difference.

However, the purchase of gas early in the day you will save money because of the economy. According to Brad Proctor, GasPriceWatch.com founder, a website of price comparison for consumer and business fleets, the best prices are mostly likely to be before noon.

"A community, especially the large cities, it will be a great player in gasoline," said Proctor. "These are the stores belonging to the company, and they have a process where their managers come each morning with a list price of their competitors." Price data are sent each store in a data center central business, where it is used with other information such as cash flow, market fees and the stock market to set the price of the day for the whole of the chain. "This is usually done first thing in the morning," says Proctor.

Once the big players set their prices, the other stores in the region will follow suit. "You get a couple of organizations such as Sam who will hold their prices for 24 hours," said Proctor, but everyone will be jack their right now. "It says that you usually an hour or two before all stores in the area sell gas at roughly the same price.

You might think holding prices down would be a good competitive blow for these smaller stations, but Proctor, said maintenance of price parity is actually a method of survival. "If they're selling at 20 cents below the station in the street, they will have a run on gas, and they will be exhausted." If this happened, it could be days or even a week before they get a new delivery of gasoline, since these small businesses you issued as often as giants such as BP or ExxonMobil.

When prices rise, they descend more slowly. "It is natural competition," says Proctor. "This is the normal cycle of what happens.". But when it rises, it tends to go big, "he said completing the morning is always the safest bet for your portfolio." "When I win and save money, she bought lunch me date there each time.".

Choose the good day to buy can result in significant savings, said Jason Toews, GasBuddy.com co-founder, another site that helps consumers compare local gasoline prices. "Wednesdays are the most beautiful day of the week for cheap gas prices", he said personal finance of Kiplinger. "Stations have tended to increase prices on purposes of week and especially during the summer." Therefore avoid refuel of peak travel days and paste with the middle of the week, if you can.

Make the right decision on the location where purchase may also save you. GasBuddy has several tips for saving money on their site, such as the purchase of suburban stations, rather than gas in areas rich metro, where prices will tend to be higher. In addition, gas on the highway or in the vicinity of large output stations will also tend to have more inflated prices.

Other good ways to save on gas, according to Russell NNM McLendon, is to keep your speedometer below 60 mph, avoiding the idling, and ensure that your gas cap is securely tightened to avoid any evaporation.
