Twins born in Rwanda (AFP) mountain gorilla

KIGALI (AFP) - a mountain in the North of Rwanda Gorilla gave birth to twins, a rare event for a species endangered whose number has dropped below 800, officials said Friday.

"Two babies, a male and a female, born May 27," said Rica Rwigamba, head of tourism and conservation to the Rwanda Development Board.

"Two infants and their mother Ruvumu are well,"she said.""

It is only the seventh time in the past 40 years that a gorilla has given birth to twins. Last, twin gorillas were born in February.

Twenty-two baby mountain gorillas will be "baptized" at a ceremony to name June 18 in Rwanda's volcanoes National Park.

Twins born in February will be among the baptized, but only the last two will be appointed at the ceremony next year.

A 2010 census, the total number of mountain gorillas has increased by a quarter over the past seven years, reaching more than 780 people.

Two-thirds of them are found in the Virunga chain which straddles Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They have brought to the attention of the outside world by the famous primatologist U.S., the late Dian Fossey.
