HP entered cloud computing of the base of its existing HP data centers around the world and will invest in its software division until it is competitive in all aspects of cloud computing, CEO Leo Apothekersaid Monday.

It was a bold reversal of somewhat disjointed and hesitant steps that HP has taken towards the cloud in the past. If HP can live its objective, and when it will deliver key elements, are questions which cannot be answered immediately.

Questioned, Apotheker said HP will become an infrastructure-as-a-service provider - that is to say, a provider of calculating gross cycles available on the Internet with storage services, immediately. It will become a supplier of platform-as-a-service, where the provider provides wizards, tools, components and other forms of assistance to help its customers to create applications and services for its clouds, at the end of 2012.

At the end of January, HP said it is ready to offer infrastructure as a service of its data centres in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Wynyard, England.

"In regards to the scalability needed to be a cloud provider, we already invest significantly." We already have data centers available today "used by HP customers, including some known providers of cloud services." "From a perspective of large investments, a little of it is already on the books," said Apotheker at a press conference in San Francisco Monday, challenging Johnny-come-lately of HP to the status of clouds.

Clouds are large scale build-outs of x 86 server architectures. "HP is the largest provider in the world of PC of any type." It goes same for printers - of any type. From this point of view, we have a possibility of scale unparalleled in the industry, "Apotheker added." HP shipped desktops, laptops and netbooks 64 million in 2010.

At the same time, it was reported that the HP's WebOS operating system for mobile devices will be loaded on all PCs and printers that it ships in the future. The operating system can run above the Windows, providing mobile services.

The volume of laptops and computers that it ships will give HP a potential WebOS user base of millions of devices in a short time. PCs easily synchronize with smartphones could prove to be an interesting combination, particularly for professional users. And a base of millions of devices potentially attract developers to provide applications - although many developers is already busy provide applications in the suite for Apple iPad-iPhone-iPod and Android phones. HP announced two WebOS smartphones and computer touchpad Tablet WebOS running on February 9. Phones and the TouchPad will become available in June. Several WebOS devices will follow, promised Apotheker.

More than other suppliers, HP will focus also on computer secure "instrument end user to the data center." Few people realize, but HP is the "fifth IT security company in the world," Apotheker said.
