Jive to acquire proximal for Big data Analytics

Jive Software is purchase Proximal Labs, a startup that has been in business for less than a year, but includes a team of big-data of heavy goods vehicles and military level social analytics smarts. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Jive has already started incorporating technology Proximal Labs in the recommendation engine that is included in his next company social media press release, but "we are just scratching the surface" of the potential, said Brian Roddy, Senior Vice President of engineering at Jive. The objective is to use artificial intelligence techniques to analyze the "social graph" - patterns in how people interact with each other, as captured by a social network - and connect the right people for the right data at the right time. It is also on identification of expertise within the Organization and connecting the right people to each other, he said.

"Law, organizations rely on knowledge tribal to make that possible," Roddy said. While the Web has produced numerous recommendations for consumer products, make recommendations based on data of the company is a different class of the problem and Jive looked "almost 50 companies" before settling on Proximal as the best company to resolveHe said. The proximal technology can also be used to improve the analysis of social networks of internal enterprise, and the Jive social media monitoring capabilities.

David Gutelius, CEO of Proximal, will take the title of Chief researcher in social sciences at Jive. In addition to establishing himself in the world of technology, he has a background in social sciences and holds a Ph.d. in history from Johns Hopkins University economy. Gutelius has already served as CTO of Social Kenetics, a business derived from SRI International, bought by RedBrick Health in October, focused on the application of technology in health care. Proximal laboratories was just getting started when Kenetics Social has been sold, but he had already pulled together a team comprising senior members of the Apache Hadoop project for the analysis of very large data sets. The initial product was the Proximal Core service, which is in the "Twitter fire hose" (a stream of all public data posted on Twitter each day) with another set of data mass, the blog and news service feed of Spinn3r.

These data, Proximal product "a detailed understanding of what a particular Twitter user participated, was interested in, and their relations with the people that they may follow or could answer", said Gutelius. The concept of the creation of a "cognitive prosthetic" to help humans deal with the overwhelming volume of information comes from a Defense Advanced Research projects Agency (DARPA) project, he contributed to other Sri called Wizard custom that Learns, or PAL. The part of the project, he has worked on that analyzed the social network between the officers of the army to identify relationships and centres of expertise.

The technology has been applied to networks operational in Iraq, "we were told that he pushed the needle in terms of saving lives," said Gutelius. "In 2005 and 2006, the enemy has propose a new set of techniques for the use of IEDs [improvised explosive], and our guys have had a difficult to follow the pace of innovation." We have seen many questions coming through this theme, frantically asking who knows what to this subject. "Analysis of these conversations, his team" succeeded on the surface of the right person with the right information around this ", he said and"literally put the right people in the team of virtual right at the right time." One of these officers, after firing from a base of operations, advanced, then to lead an army of excellence centre focused on the fight against improvised explosive devices.

Now, Jive wants to apply the same techniques the military used to save the lives to help businesses save money, earn money and innovation through social analytics.

"The good news is that we have this social conversation and dialog box goes," Jive CEO Tony Zingale said, so the next step is to formulate recommendations better based on it to connect users with colleaguescustomers, partners, and data that can help them achieve their goals. "There is a natural evolution taking place here."

"I do not think that this is a very good direction for Jive to go," Erin k. Traudt, Director of IDC research for the collaboration of the business and social services. As the social networking market enterprise becomes more competitive, the Jive competitors are also focused on analytics as a key, they will need to be distinguished.

Recently, Jive was positioned just behind Socialtext as the best in Information Week of ranking Pro Enterprise 2.0 vendors.
