VA launches Health Information Exchange pilot

As the Department of Veterans Affairs continues to build its health information technology infrastructure to serve the population veteran, the Ministry said that it starts a project pilot in the Richmond area to improve the provision of information on the health of veterans.

The driver, announced last week, is to Richmond VA Medical Center and MedVirginia (MedVA), a healthcare it group serving central Virginia which was created in 2000 by a consortium of Virginia health care providers. The two organizations will partner to create a comprehensive health information network for the exchange of health information using health virtual electronic lifetime record (VLER) for VA.

VLER actions select the exhibits medical of a fighters electronically, safely, and private with other health care establishments approved who are members of the National Health Information network. VLER health program has developed the exchange of information between different health care systems.

WILL chose the Richmond region because it has a high concentration of veterans, retired military personnel and members of the guard and reserve this region. The Richmond VA Medical Center serves as an estimate of 200,000 from 52 cities and counties veterans.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki k., stated that "this pilot project is a step in more taken to deliver an electronic record of virtual life for Veterans of our country and members of the service".

MedVirginia, the Richmond group, has long been put emphasis on initiatives to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of health care through it, innovations, including the launch of the MedVirginia Solution, a health information exchange, 2006 community. Richmond driver builds on the success of the pilots VLER program at San Diego and Hampton Roads/Tidewater, Virginia Participants will exchange information using health information network in the country.

VA says vets in the Richmond region will be invited to participate in this programme of exchange of health data, which went live on March 11. Veterans who choose to participate will authorize their public health professionals and the private sector and physicians to share specific health electronic information. No exchange of information will occur without the permission of each patient.

VA has made several recent announcements that it is moving forward with a comprehensive health information technology strategy. Earlier this month, Thebes released a request for project proposals develop an electronic health record system based on open source.

Last November, the Ministry said it will work with a private contractor to expedite decisions of claims and substantially reduce the average time needed to obtain the medical records of private doctors.
